Golden keyboards blinging onto wealthy computers

By Susan Wilson

Golden keyboards blinging onto wealthy computers Now you can get what you have always wanted.  Not a gold plated Blackberry, or iPhone, but a keyboard covered in gold leaf.  You too can look cool while wasting money!

This keyboard can be purchased at The Japan Trend Shop online.  Called the Kirameki Pure Gold Keyboard, it will only set you back a cool $359.00 (plus shipping of course).

The store describes the keyboard as follows:

Wanting a Midas touch? Check out the Kirameki Pure Gold Keyboard coated with 100% pure gold leaf by Wazakura Studios. Not just a stunning object of worship, this fully functional keyboard features a base that adjusts for height and two USB ports, plus right, left, and center options for the connector cable.

While gold leaf has a long artisan tradition in Japan, the craftsmen behind this glittering computer accessory have updated their technique for the rigueur of daily use, meaning the Pure Gold Keyboard is as durable as it is enviable.

Wow, durable gold leaf.  Does that mean that if I decide I’d rather strip the gold leaf off and pawn it, I can’t?  Really the look of the keyboard is quite tacky.  It looks as if each individual key has been covered in gold tinted aluminum foil.  They look as if they can be as easily unwrapped as a miniature Reese's peanutbutter cup or chocolate “gold” coins.

Although the website talks about the gold leaf being able to endure the “rigueur of daily use” it looks as if it would fall off or wear through within a short period of time.  Of course, if someone really is going to purchase this keyboard, chances are they aren’t the one doing any real typing.  As a desk accessory, I guess it might make sense for the “more money than sense” crowd.

It is also a misnomer to call this a “Pure Gold Keyboard”.  The keyboard itself is just a keyboard with an overlay of thin gold leaf.  If you want a fancy functional keyboard, that is much more affordable, just hop down to your closest Best Buy and pick up a new keyboard or wander over to any online computer store and find one that is not only functional but ergonomically correct as well.

The Goldtouch Ergo Suite Heck if you just want to spend outrageous sums of money on a keyboard, go to The Human Solution website and get the "Goldtouch Ergo Suite" for $269.00 (plus shipping) and get a much better solution than the faux gold keyboard above.  You even get color choices, right hand/left hand choices and mouse choices.
